Viral Strain: Enders (ATCC) propagated in LLC-MK2 Cells Glycine, pH 9 - 9.5 approx 0.2-0.5 mgs/ml (40-60% Viral Protein Store -70 DEG C

Mumps antigen is prepared by glycine extraction of LLC-MK2 cells infected with mumps virus, strain Enders (ATCC). The preparation is partially purified to reduce host cell components, and is inactivated. This antigen yields high sensitivity and low background in the ELISA

MUMPS VIRUS is a systemic viral disease of man. Two-thirds of infections cause a characteristic swelling of salivary glands which provides the most visibly apparent clinical symptom. Although sequelae including meningioenchephalitis, orchiditis leading to atrophy, and some fetal wastage may be attributed to the disease, most cases are limited to nausea, vomiting, neck stiffness and headache. Control measures for mumps are directed at prevention through vaccination.

Serological diagnosis is the most common method of identification as a method to differentiate the disease from other parotitis-causing agents, and to identify candidates for vaccination. IgM detection appears to be the most sensitive method to indicate acute infection, with little cross-reactivity with related antigens. However, current IgG tests appear to cross-react with parainfluenza virus antigens.
