Varicella-Zoster Virus antigen is prepared by glycine extraction of human fibroblasts infected with VZV, strain ELLEN (ATCC). The inactivated antigen is partially purified to reduce host cell components. This preparation yields high sensitivity and low background in the ELISA and other solid phase immunoassays.
Varicella-Zoster Virus (VZV) is the etiologic agent of two clinical diseases: varicella or "chickenpox" and zoster or "shingles." Varicella, a mild infection in normal children, represents a major problem in immunocompromised patients. It is the leading cause of death from an infectious agent in leukemic children who are in remission.
The presence of serum antibody to VZV has been shown to correlate with immunity to varicella. Determination of immune status to varicella is important for hospital personnel in contact with immunocompromised patients. When the live attenuated VZV vaccine becomes licensed, it will be necessary to determine the immune status of patients to evaluate their eligibility to receive the vaccine.

STORAGE: Protein is shipped at ambient temperature. Upon arrival, Store at -200C.
